About This Role

To coordinate activities between the Ore Control Modelling and Grade Control functions and to perform a QA / QC function on ore mined and tracked to various destinations.

In This Role You Will

Production Geology Planning

  • Undertake geological mapping activities to enhance the understanding of geological controls of mineralisation, and ore and waste delineation.
  • Oversee the refreshing of mark outs in the mining area by the Grade Control Geologist.
  • Coordinate the design and processing of blast movement parameters.
  • Review bench sampling area.
  • Assist in the development of all Mine Geology Standard Operating Procedures.

Production Geology Execution

  • Manage and refine procedures and methodologies employed to govern selective mining.
  • Reconcile daily mined tonnage versus dispatch tonnes and find solutions to variances.
  • Conduct periodic sampling studies for continuous improvement.
  • Assist with monthly reconciliation processes to reconcile planned with actual production data.
  • Confirm polygon compliance against data captured to determine mining accuracy.
  • Check for misrouting of material, investigate root cause and recommend potential solutions and / or systems adjustments to ensure that future misrouting is eliminated.
  • Liaise with Drill and Blast to agree on blast design, with less detrimental impact on ore quality.
  • Work with Short Term Planning Engineers to factor in geological standards into the planning process (i.e., mining direction and blast and sequence).

Reserve Conversion Drilling

  • Supervise the execution of reserve conversion drilling.
  • Carry out geological logging of drill holes including geotechnical and structural data capture.
  • Assist with the geological modeling process.

Production Geology Data Analysis

  • Coordinate the collation of data from Samplers / Lab and carry out sampling studies.
  • Manage the timely and accurate collection of geological information to optimize Ore production.
  • Report daily ore production data accurately.
  • Channel blast movement designs data processing for review by the Chief Mine Geologist / Geology Area Mine Manager.

Team Leadership

  • Provide guidance and expertise to Grade Control Geologists, Geological Technicians and Samplers prior to production.
  • Coordinate all Production Geology activities and dispatch work schedules for the Geological Technicians and Samplers.
  • Facilitate training of Grade Control Geologists.

Work Scheduling and Allocation

  • Communicate with Mine Production personnel daily to prevent dilution during ore loading.
  • Develop daily work schedule and assign work to other staff to expedite workflow and accomplish high priority tasks, as needed.
  • Establish short-term activities directed toward work continuity.
  • Exercise considerable judgment in establishing job priorities.

Health and Safety Management

  • Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of every employee under or assigned to his/her supervision.
  • Provide hands-on assistance during operations activities and ensuring that safe work practices are followed.
  • Abide by and support others in carrying out activities according to Newmont Health and Safety principles.

Staff Supervision

  • Supervise moderate to complex Geological activities conducted through assigned team member(s) by:
    • Prioritizing and allocating tasks / responsibilities.
    • Checking and controlling the quality of work outputs.
    • Providing on-the-job training, mentoring, and coaching.
    • Performing the first level of performance appraisal.
    • Recommending further / relevant training courses and development actions.
    • Recommending salary increases or promotions for staff.
    • Disciplining poor performance or actions (first level of disciplinary).
    • Enhancing communication with staff through regular feedback, contact, meetings, and briefings, etc.

Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Geology / Geological Engineering / Earth Science.

Additional Knowledge

  • Sound understanding of the following:
    • Development Geology
    • Production Geology

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 – 7 years in a Mine Geology environment, which includes 2 – 3 years exposure to Supervisory activities.

Technical Skills

  • Must be able to meet the requirements of a Grade Control Geologist.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
