ABOUT THIS ROLE:

  • To coordinate and manage the activities of the Process Plant Operations team in the operation of the Ahafo North process plant to attain maximum production (high throughput and recovery of gold production at lowest unit cost) in a safe and cost-effective manner.
  • To review results and operating conditions and make changes that would improve plant performance and output.
  • To develops budgets and maintains operating costs within budget.

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:

Health, Safety and Environment

  • Become familiar and strictly adhere to Newmont’s Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental standards. Act as a role model in complying with and supporting these standards and practices.
  • Accept personal accountability for the health and safety of every employee under or assigned to his/her supervision.
  • Comply with all HSLP, Environment and Social Responsibility requirements under Newmont’s Integrated Management System as well as under Newmont’s vision and values.
  • Conduct and complete incident / accident investigations and take corrective action to prevent injury and / or re-occurrence.
  • Ensure implementation of job and safety training programs.
  • Ensure that applicable environmental regulations and compliance programs are implemented.

 

Production

  • Plan and direct plant production volume to meet schedules and delivery dates.
  • Coordinate with maintenance plans for plant equipment to ensure production requirements are met.
  • Prepare work schedules and ensure that the process equipment is run to give the best economic return between equipment longevity and throughput.
  • Prepare and maintain production reports.
  • Coordinate activities with technical, metallurgical and assay departments; maintain metallurgical operations standards.
  • Initiate projects and direct activities leading to the continuous improvement of safety and production.

 

People Management 

  • Directly supervise the General Foremen Process Operations.
  • Ensure that staff training and development programs are conducted in accordance with Newmont’s people development programs.
  • Ensure the transfer of technology from Expatriate to National employees and the promotion and support of National employee training and skill development.
  • Responsible for the development of Operations functional work plans.
  • Responsible for the achievement of the plans and goals through ongoing monitoring of progress.

Functional Planning/Scheduling 

  • Responsible for the development of Operations functional work plans.
  • Responsible for the achievement of the plans and goals through ongoing monitoring of progress.
  • Responsible to ensure Risks (Business, safety, environmental, health, etc.) impacting the Processing Operations are managed to the required standard/level.
  • Manage the Management Operating System (MOS) the production section on the processing plant and take ownership of the following MOS elements:
    • Weekly Mine to Mill (P007, MS).
    • Daily Review (P023,M3).
  • Accountable for achieving and maintaining level 3 maturity for MOS elements identified as ‘Accountable’ on the MOS RACI chart. This includes being accountable for:
    • Taking immediate action on non-conformances and MOS improvement opportunities.
    • Inducting new team members in the MOS Elements related to their roles.
  • Responsible for:
    • The completion of all tasks identified in the Ahafo MOS to the specified quality and timeliness as assigned.
    • Resolving MOS Element non-conformances by direct intervention/ coaching wherever possible or referring non- conformances to Superintendents and Manager for resolution if immediate efforts are not successful.  Taking action on identified improvement opportunities to the MOS Element.
    • Ensuring that all MOS Element documentation is current and approved changes to the MOS Elements are communicated to all involved stakeholders.
    • Inducting new team members in their respective MOS elements.

 

Financial Management

  • Responsible for writing Authorization for Expenditure (AFEs) for capital expenditure that will improve throughput, reduce cost or improve efficiencies.
  • Appropriately manage the capital program for the processing production section:
  • As an AFE manager for sustaining capital, ensure:
    • timeliness in submission of AFEs.
    • quality of submitted AFEs.
    • timeliness of capital spend.
  • As a Cost Center manager with sustaining capital, ensure that expenditure will be within set target ranges, adjusted for in planning assumptions and decisions.
  • As an AFE Manager with a closed project, ensure:
    • prompt closing out of projects.
    • project deliverables have been met.
  • Responsible for input to the Business Planning process.
  • Responsible for budgeting and cost control for a number of cost centers.
  • Accountable for approval of purchases and expenditure within the delegated limits of authority.

 

Project Management

  • Oversee development projects.
  • Control and direct project status.
  • Initiate corrective action to deliver projects on time and within cost by ensuring project compliance and quality are achieved while identifying improvement opportunities.

YOUR TRAINING, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE CHECKLIST

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

  • Bachelor’s Degree / Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering or Mineral Processing or related field and equivalent combination of training and experience in leading a large multi-national processing plant.
  • Process /Plant/Metallurgical Superintendent’s Certificate of Competency from the inspectorate division of Minerals Commission, Ghana.

 

Additional Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of both Shutdown and Maintenance Planning.
  • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) / Systems, Applications and Processes (SAP).
  • Knowledge of local laws, regulations and requirements.
  • A working knowledge of logistics software.
  • Finance and Accounting knowledge will be useful.

 

Experience: 

  • A combined management or superintendent level experience in the mining industry of construction, commissioning and operational phases of large-scale processing plant.
  • Minimum of 8 years’ working experience in a mineral processing plant, with a minimum of 3 years in gold processing and demonstrated expertise in SAG grinding.
  • Management and supervisory experience in a developing country with a large group of employees, both staff and hourly.
  • Management and supervisory experience with a large group of employees (both staff and hourly) in a developing country is preferred
  • Process start-up experience would be a plus.

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access).
  • Strong presentation, facilitation, and consultation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to identify and analyze organizational needs.

  • The position is located in Ahafo North.
  • Managing operations in a very environmentally sensitive and socially challenging environment.

    • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
    • Physical Demands: while performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to sit at a desk, climb stairs, walk and stand for periods of time.
    • Work Environment: occasional exposure to noise, fumes, high temperatures, hazardous materials, sharp edges, dust, pinch-points, vibration, slippery surfaces etc.
