About This Role

  • To aid in building, implementing and overseeing on-site Health and Safety policies, programs and initiatives relating to the Integrated and Health Safety Management system.

In This Role You Will

Health and Safety Policy, Procedural and Program Development

  • Facilitate the development and review of Health and Safety policies and procedures, in accordance with site, Newmont and local Ghanaian regulations and legislation.
  • Work with Mine Management to design, develop and administer Newmont programs that link to the current Health and Safety strategy to protect employees from work hazards and prevent incidents/accidents.
  • Facilitate and promote the adoption of new Health and Safety training programs and practices.

Health and Safety Operational Execution

  • Facilitate inspections to ensure compliance with Health and Safety requirements and governmental legislation.
  • Conduct Health and Safety investigations, including complaints, serious harm, incidents, and accidents, and document findings in detailed reports.
  • Coordinate Health and Safety audits, risk assessments, reviews, and inspections, and integrate these activities into production efforts.
  • Provide internal Health and Safety consulting services to Newmont line management and act as a team leader for task forces and teams when required.
  • Collaborate with Mine Managers, Process Managers, Project Managers, Contractors, Health and Safety Committee members, and Government inspectors to optimize on-site safety programs and systems in Ahafo.

Health and Safety Reporting, Compliance and Continuous Improvement

  • Participate and facilitate in event investigations to discover root causes and identify appropriate corrective actions.
  • Identify potentially hazardous situations and report them to the Area Superintendent or Manager for immediate action.
  • Maintain and report on Health and Safety records and statistics, monitoring both preventative and post-review indicators.
  • Analyze and evaluate data from leading and lagging indicators, suggesting improvements to correct deviations from targets.
  • Review internal and external Health and Safety reports within contractor areas, implementing measures to minimize unfavorable incidents and highlighting non-compliance violations to the Superintendent.

Health and Safety Stakeholder Management, Communication and Capacity Development

  • Assist line management regarding Health and Safety hazard identification exercises, risk management processes, safety rules, regulations and trends.

Staff Supervision

  • Manage allocated staff member(s) by:
    • prioritising and allocating tasks / responsibilities.
    • checking and controlling the quality of work outputs.
    • recommending further / relevant training courses and development actions.
    • disciplining bad performance or actions.
    • enhancing communication with staff through regular feedback, contact, meetings and briefings.

Your Training, Skills And Experience Checklist

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety or Engineering.
  • National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) General Certification in Occupational Health and Safety.

Additional Knowledge

  • Thorough knowledge of relevant local Health and Safety legislative requirements.
  • Sound understanding of Safety Management systems.
  • Sound knowledge and experience of risk management and loss prevention processes.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 – 5 years’ working experience as a Health and Safety Officer.

Technical Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer literacy skills – MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Sound conflict management skills.
