About This Role

  • This role shall assist the Mine Geologist in the day-to-day management of drilled core from underground drills at Subika to delivery of same to the assay lab.
  • The role has a broad responsibility base that is partitioned into the key functions of core shed and underground activities.
  • The Geological Technician will assume responsibility for each of these functions on a rotational basis to help ensure that all core processing KPIs are met.

In This Role You Will

Core Shed

  • Ensure drill core is delivered to the core shed daily and timely from underground for processing. Check core blocks to ensure accuracy of hole IDs, core-tray labels and core depth indicated by drillers.
  • Prepare drill core for logging by putting on metre marks and indicating core loss zones. Ensure sample tags are prepared after geologist has logged and put in sample breaks.
  • Carryout core sampling based on cut sheet generated by geologist and appropriately place samples in correct bags with labels and insert recommended QAQC materials for assaying
  • Ensure that core photos are properly taken, named according to the correct naming convention, and securely archived at the appropriate destination on the server.
  • Maintain stock levels of drilling and sampling consumables (eg. Core trays, core blocks, sample bags marker pens and CRM.
  • Liaise with assay lab to ensure pulp samples are periodically transported from the lab for storage.
  • Work with the drilling geologists to review and update core processing procedures.
  • Regularly enter daily drill plods data into drill spreadsheet and undertake other relevant general duties assigned by geologists.

Underground

  • Ensure area to be mapped is washed and check scaled if required and undertake scan/photo mapping underground.
  • Perform SLS grab sampling underground in accordance with the SOP and ensure samples are promptly processed, adding required QAQC material and dispatch same to dispatched to the laboratory for analysis.
  • Perform stockpile and heading checks and other relevant general duties assigned by geologists.

Health and Safety and Environment

  • Participate and contribute to safe practice and environmental awareness.
  • Actively participate in all Newmont Ghana safety and environmental systems and initiatives.
  • Demonstrate personal commitment in regard to safety and environmental practices.
  • Identification of potential hazards and action that is appropriately taken.
  • Maintenance of a high standard of efficiency, safety and effectiveness.
  • Raising, discussion and resolution of safety issues at regular meetings.

Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

Minimum of SHS Certificate.

Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years core shed and core processing experience, previous underground experience preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years driving experience in a mining environment.

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of core handling activities.
  • A demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Effectively communicate with key stakeholders.
  • Interpersonal skills required to liaise with Business Partners.
  • Sound administration and Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Be self-motivated.

Working Conditions

  • This position is located at the Ahafo South mine site.
