Your Impact

  • The Engineer, Short-Term Planning will be responsible for designing, implementation and guidance for all drilling and blasting operations within our open pit mine.
  • This position will work closely with Geology, Operations and Mine Planning Teams to ensure that blasting activities support production goals and comply with regulatory standards.

As Part Of Our Team, You Will

Safety

  • Comply with all Newmont Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
  • Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of every employee under or assigned to his/her supervision.
  • Comply with all Health & Safety, Environment and Social Responsibility requirements under Newmont’s Integrated Management System, Newmont vision and values.
  • Conduct and complete incident / accident investigations and take corrective action to prevent injury and / or reoccurrence (involving team members).

Drill and Blast Designs

  • Blast Design & Implementation: Develop and optimize blast designs to achieve fragmentation and cost objectives, while ensuring minimal environmental impact and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Support in mine scheduling activities to assist with drill and blast plan for weekly, monthly and three months scheduling.
  • Operational Guidance: Guide operations in drilling and blasting activities, coordinating with on-site teams to ensure efficient, safe and timely execution of blasting operations.
  • Recommend improvement activities to achieve and exceed key performance indicators (KPI’s).
  • Investigate and recommend modifications to present operations when more flexible and feasible engineering alternatives could render improvements.
  • Cost Management: Assist with blasting-related budgets, seeking cost-saving measures without compromising safety or quality.
  • Quality Control & Improvement: Monitor blast results, analyze fragmentation data and adjust designs to improve performance and mitigate any operational issues.
  • Collaboration with other Departments: Work closely with the Geology, Mine Planning, Geotechnical and Operations teams to align drilling and blasting activities with production schedules.

Environment and Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to policies, standards and procedures in all areas of operations.
  • Monitor blast variations and emissions to ensure compliance with the national and best practice guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety procedures, codes and regulations and assist in securing permits.

Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

  • Degree in Mining Engineering.
  • Blasting Certificate of Competency.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in open pit drilling and blasting operations.

Technical Skills

  • Familiarity with drill and blast principles, explosives handling, and safety regulations.
  • Ability to visualize and communicate mine designs using specialized mine design software such as:
    • Minesight, Deswik, Surpac, Mineshed etc.
    • Shotplus-i.
    • Blast-IQ.
    • Split Desktop, FRAGtrack, Shovel Matrix, WipFrag etc.
    • MineStar.
    • MineOps/Hexagon.
  • Strong PC skills using Microsoft Office software such as Excel, Word and Power Point.
  • Strong presentation, facilitation and consultation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to identify and analyze organizational needs.
  • Demonstrate strong supervisory, verbal and written communication skills.
