Job Description


The Country Sustainability ManagerGhana will have to develop local sustainability strategy and provide supervision in all sustainability initiatives in line with the Barry Callebauts’ global sustainability road plan implementation and with collaboration of partners like Rainforest Alliance, WCF, Jacobs Foundations amongst others. He/ She will ensure projects’ defined deliverables and operational compliance. The role is embedded in Barry Callebaut’s Licensed Buying Company in Ghana, Nyonkopa Cocoa Buying Ltd with direct reporting to the Managing Director of Nyonkopa Cocoa Buying Ltd. The Country Sustainability Manger (Ghana) contributes to the company’s profit by managing the implementation of Barry Callebaut’s sustainability strategy in Ghana. This includes full P&L responsibility, managing staff, performance management of projects and standard operations, accomplishing business objectives, management of BC’s presence in the local cocoa sustainability ecosystem, and supporting M&E, client relations and R&D. The implementation of sustainability strategy in Ghana aims at creating positive return for the company, fulfill bean sourcing sustainability specifications and volume boundaries, fulfilling client and donor contracts and achieving positive impact for the livelihoods of individual farmers. From a programme perspective, the role is responsible for implementation of our Cocoa Horizons programme and Rainforest Alliance certification. The Country Manager is also responsible for Farm Services delivery, the implementation of all activities to eradicate child labor from the value chain, and all client and donor projects. The role requires excellent coordination with Regional and Global Sustainability team functions and other origin Business Units of BC.

Key Responsibilities

    • Restructuring of the department and define all key profile requirements for the business growth in Ghana and lead the recruitment of all team members for various roles.
    • Evaluate performance of team members against clear targets and provide a clear career path for them towards growth and serve as lead recruiter for team members of various roles.
    • Act as a role model for BC values, mentor and empower the team to function independently towards set targets and deliverables.
    • Be the contact point for all external communication linked to sustainability with local authorities, civil society or partners . Liaising with the government and other research organizations regularly ( COCOBOD, Forestry Commission, Forest Research Institute of Ghana, Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana) towards objective of Forever Chocolate pillars ( Prospering Farmers and Forest Positive)
    • Act as the key architect to grow the sustainability business in Ghana through Farm Service deployment
    • Facilitate the team to engage farmers and farmer groups to offer services and farm inputs based on our farm business plans which personalize the offerings to the farmers.
    • Establish a clear roadmap on child protection intervention in order to eradicate child labor within our supply chain
    • Organize the team in managing all the certification projects and programs in the country linked to farmer group creations, training, audit and certifications. Liaise with Certification Bodies and coordinate all audit processes and outcomes.
    • Establish efficient Monitoring and Evaluation System, data verification and reliability.
    • Coordinate the submission of Country sustainability business monthly updates and ensure activities are implemented according to corporate standards
    • Design and implement strategic initiatives in order to increase farmers income, act positively on environment or strengthen farmer groups and their communities
    • Responsible for budget development for all sustainability operations as well as manage the budget and estimate costs allocated for sustainability activities.

 

About You

  • Master degree in relevant field such as agronomy, development economics, environmental science.
  • Strong Leadership skills, with good integrity and work ethics.
  • Exceptional project management skills and demonstrate the ability to coordinate interrelated activity streams spanning large groups.
  • At least 5 years’ operational and managerial experience in running field level activities in the rural environment (does not need to be cocoa specific) and willingness to travel to rural areas regularly. At least 25% of the time.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, assess priorities and multi task with strong attention to detail.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, ability to build trust, openness to feedback and new ideas.
  • Ability to work in multicultural, multidisciplinary team and deliver high quality work within deadlines to meet objectives.
  • Entrepreneurial minded with a strong sense of service to farmers and farming communities and demonstrated aptitude for business development.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications – Word, Power Point and Excel to a competent standard
