Our client, a reputable bank is seeking to recruit a dynamic and focused individual for the position of Head, Legal Department

Job Location



Reporting to the CEO, the Head of Legal will provide legal and advisory support to the business. The role-holder will lead in the proactive and strategic identification of legal risks and effectively manage all legal issues in the bank. The person will provide up-to-date and relevant guidance on the application and interpretation of laws, regulations and policies applicable to the functions.

  • The Head of Legal will advise on contractual risk including the monitoring and evaluation of the performance of defaulting customers and study the governance policy in relation to the financial sector and make the necessary recommendation on company policy.
  • Initiate court action against persons, enterprises, partnership, companies or business entities who are refusing to pay but are capable or have valuable to ‘attach’ in satisfaction of judgment debt.
  • Provide timely legal advice, briefings and recommendations on key legal issues to stakeholders including applicable legislations, banking codes, governance regulations as may be applicable.
  • Responsible for rolling out legal risk policies and procedures, ensuring that senior management fully understands the scope and requirements of Legal and related policies and that all necessary dispensations are in place and current.
  • Train and coach all staff in the Legal Department in the finer details of their duties.
  • Manage the process of engaging external counsel including effective instructions and negotiating appropriate fee structures for the transaction / case in question.
  • Assist with the structure and negotiation of investments.
  • Advice the company on all legal issues, including those arising from staff grievances, disciplinary procedures and administrative matters relating to the Bank’s offices in Accra and other sites of operation.
  • Review progress of outstanding litigation and liaise with and manage external lawyers.
  • Continuously monitor compliance with statutory obligations and advise management accordingly.
  • Review all contracts or any other documentation where the Company has committed itself and assess legal implications that need to be brought to executive management’s attention.
  • Prepare, review and modify contractual instruments to assist and support various business activities.


  • Sound knowledge of the laws of Ghana including the Banking Act, regulations and policies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and experience with, laws dealing with government and/or commercial contract administration, particularly contract negotiation, preparation and administration.
  • A good understanding of the corporate environment as well as the banking industry.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, team and managerial skills.
  • Excellent relationship management and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate success in managing and conducting a variety of litigation cases.
  • Show evidence of clear analytical thinking.
  • Team focus and managing performance including coaching skills.
  • Self-motivated, flexible, mature, articulate in speech and presentation.
  • A qualified senior lawyer with a minimum of ten (10) years post qualification experience
