IPA Ghana is looking to hire one intern starting in February to help launch the listing and baseline surveys for the SME Investment and Gender project in Accra Metropolitan Area and surrounding localities. The lead researcher on this project is the World Bank Gender Innovation Lab. The study is designed to expand on the existing of knowledge of what works to help women develop their businesses. More specifically, it aims at better understanding whether and under what conditions cash grants can increase the profits of female-owned firm. The objective of the first survey (listing) is to create a representative listing of 12000 households. The objective of the second survey (baseline survey) is to collect data on a pre-selected sample of 3000 women running small businesses and their households.

Position Summary: The intern will work closely with the Research Associate and the Research Manager to support all planning process, logistics and data management for the upcoming fieldwork. In particular, the intern will help program the questionnaire into Survey CTO, and manage high frequency checks on the incoming data during the survey. The intern may also be involved in training field staff on survey tools and digital data collection devices, observing surveys and monitoring data quality, and systematically documenting data irregularities.


  • Quantitative training, including econometrics – for example: undergraduate or graduate studies in economics or other field with technical component
  • Advanced Stata skills (or other data analysis software)
  • Knowledge of Survey CTO or other Android based programming software (preferred)
  • Fluency and excellent communication skills in English
  • Self-starter, resourceful and detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse constituencies
  • Ability to understand and consistently work towards achieving the highest quality data analysis and documenting steps taken
  • Eager to learn, and gain experience in a fast paced organization
  • Familiarity with randomized controlled trials is a plus
  • Experience living in a developing country is a plus
