About This Role:

  • To develop and manage all environmental aspects relating to Ahafo North closure, as well as concurrent reclamation and waste management program to ensure compliance to environmental policies, procedures and standards, Ghanaian laws and regulation, as well as Newmont Corporate Environmental Standards.

In This Role You Will:

Closure and Reclamations

  • Coordinate with consultants to conduct relevant studies related to closure and reclamation plans.
  • Coordinate the collation of all necessary information for Life of Mine closure and reclamation liability costs, as well as the EPA Reclamation Bonding process.
  • Liaise with the Mine Engineering team to build an end-to-end Reclamation Plan that accommodates for concurrent reclamation and meets the agreed closure criteria.
  • Develop and fully implement closure and concurrent reclamation programs, according to the EPA Security Agreement and NGGL’s reclamation objectives.

 

Waste Management

  • Supervise the operations of Ahafo North waste management facilities to ensure compliance to regulations and Newmont environmental requirements.
  • Conduct risk assessment of potential impacts associated with new and existing hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams.
  • Coordinate the development of action plans to address and minimise significant environmental risks identified during risk assessment process.
  • Lead the design and implementation of all waste stream management programs associated with the Ahafo North process and support activities.
  • Update the Ahafo North Waste Management Plan on a periodic basis, or when any significant change in mining, process has been incorporated.

 

Environmental Reporting

  • Maintain the statistics on the volumes and quantities of wastes generated in the Data Management System for environmental reporting purposes.
  • Prepare environmental reports relating to closure, concurrent reclamation and waste management.
  • Participate in report reviews prior to submission to regulators (i.e. weekly report, monthly report, EPA reports).

 

Audits and Inspections

  • Conduct environmental inspections and audits.
  • Prepare reports and close out corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.

 

Team Leadership

  • Provide supervisory leadership to the Environmental Coordinators.
  • Oversee that both new and current employees have received all necessary training required to perform their work in an efficient, effective and safe manner.
  • Compile and distribute work schedules to the Environmental Coordinators.
  • Provide guidance, feedback and/or potential solutions to any escalated issues.

 

Health and Safety 

  • Lead Environment department’s contribution to the Zero Harm goal of Ahafo North with focus on quality Safety Interactions, Inspections, Audits, Risk Assessments & Impact Mitigation and Control Systems.

Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist:

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

  • First Degree in Environmental or Natural Resource Management, Engineering or other science related disciplines such as Chemistry or Biology.

 

Additional Knowledge:

  • Competency in Minerals and Mining (Health, Safety and Technical) Regulation, 2012.

 

Experience: 

  • Minimum of 7 years’ environmental management experience working in the mining or construction related environments.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a leadership role.

Working Conditions

  • Working environment of incumbent is safe.
  • Most of the incumbent’s working time will be spent in the field inspecting reclamation and waste facilities. These sites may be natural ground, waste rock dumps or within vegetation.
