Background

Food Trade West Africa is a five-year DIFD-funded initiative implemented by The Palladium Group in association with a consortium including Carana Corporation, KPMG, and Saana Consulting). It seeks to increase the availability of staple foods and purchasing power of farmers in food-insecure regions of the Sahel as well as to increase their resilience to hunger and malnutrition during the regular hungry seasons and periodic shocks.

This is to be achieved through increased food production (yield increases and/or reduction in post-harvest losses) and cross-border trade along the Ghana-Burkina Faso and Niger-Nigeria trade corridors, thereby contributing to lowering seasonal price volatility in selected food markets.

The purpose of this assignment is that during the previous two rounds of the WAFM challenge fund the focus was on the development impact of applicant business even though part of the general assessment, financial viability, expansion and long term growth of the business was not made a critical part of the evaluation. This weakens the case for long term sustainability beyond the life of the project

Primary Responsibilities

  • Evaluation of the soundness of applicants? business models, marketing and growth strategies, and its impact on the business proposal. Make recommendations for action by synthesizing financial information and trends.
  • Evaluation of business and financial reports including income statement, cash flow, balance sheets of grantees and its interpretation in clear and compelling ways.
  • Prediction of future business activity to assist the future of the project especially beyond the funding period.
  • Create tools or systems, including databases and spreadsheets to improve financial data analysis and reporting for each grantee.
  • Keeping of financial data on applicants secured and documenting activity and procedures for future reference.
  • Implement relevant actions specified in the general project work plan to achieve the stated objectives of the project.
