The International Potato Center (CIP) seeks to reduce poverty and achieve food security on a sustained basis in developing countries through scientific research and related activities on potato, sweetpotato and other root and tuber crops, and on the improved management of natural resources in the Andes and other mountain areas.

CIP is a Future Harvest Center supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). CIP headquarters are in Lima, Peru and its regional headquarters in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are in Nairobi, Kenya.

CIP scientists are also based in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia.

In Ghana, CIP offices are located at CSIR-Crops Research Institute, Kumasi, and at CSIR-Savanna Agricultural Research Institutute, Tamale. Our efforts in the region are focused on research for the improvement of the resilient, nutritious sweetpotato for health.

Finance and Administrative Assistant

The International Potato Center (CIP) seeks a dynamic and experienced Finance and Administrative Assistant

The Center: The International Potato Center (CIP) is an international research centre that seeks to reduce poverty and achieve food security on a sustained basis in developing countries through scientific research and related activities on potato, sweetpotato, and other root and tuber crops and on the improved management of natural resources in the Andes and other mountain areas.

The Position: The Finance and Administrative Assistant will be based in Tamale, Ghana. He/she will assist in a range of financial management and administrative duties under the supervision of the Country Finance and Administrative Officer.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Act as a point of contact for the Ghana program for Head Quarters (HQ) finance on accounting and reporting matters in the absence of the Administrative and Finance Manager;
  • Assist in handling all day-to-day accounting and administrative matters;
  • Enter and ensure the accuracy of monthly data entered into the CIP financial accounting package and organize monthly budget reports for the regional office in Nairobi and HQ;
  • Prepare payment vouchers and issue cheques for claims and other supplier invoices;
  • Handle the petty cash disbursement and reimbursement;
  • Responsible for asset and office supply management and management of project vehicles;
  • Offer administrative support to scientists and collaborators on project, including visitors and students;
  • Assist in organizing meetings, taking minutes of meetings and maintaining a database of contacts;
  • Handling the office telephone and receiving visitors;
  • Maintain an updated database of supplies;
  • Assist the Administrative and Finance Manager  to work with scientists to prepare budgets and donor  reports;
  • Carry out any other task or duty commensurate with job role and level.
Conditions: The employment contract will be for a two-year term (with a six month probation period) with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Required Skills or Experience

  • University degree in accounting, business administration or equivalent profession status awarded by a relevant professional institute;
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Methodical, organized and result-oriented;
  • Good knowledge of rules, regulations and procedures of government and related agencies;
  • Ability to work independently and to take initiative when sorting out problem issues;
  • Computer literate in Word and Excel;
  • Knowledge of French is highly desirable.
